WRITERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER Donna Bradley August, 2015

Attending our meeting is always an interesting way to spend a cloudy summer afternoon.  We had six around the table with five pieces of writing shared.

Bob first gave us an update on the sales of Asters and Ink.  At this point we have thirteen left to sell and are hoping that the end of summer and the coming fall will find that we have completed our mission of  sharing our writing.

Our assignment for this month was A Chance Encounter.  We heard about the chance encounter of a ten year old boy finding a pigeon like bird which he found on the steps of a ferry terminal.  “Ferry” became a loyal pet sitting on his master’s shoulder, flying high in the air and returning to his new master, and spending a week at a summer camp.

We also heard the beginning of a memoir piece inspired by a recently discovered photo, a dark picture of an old garage transferred into a blacksmith shop in 1933.  One of the three figures in the photo was a 17 year old who eventually escaped the dreary prospects of limited possibilities in Minnesota in 1933 and found his way to New Jersey to start a new life.

We were delighted to hear a new Odd tale called The Deal.  We laughed through the description of Odd driving his car through a car wash as he prepared to take his wife and just go look at new cars with no plan to purchase.  The description of the car dealer and his maneuvering statements which of course trapped Odd into making the purchase were right on the mark.

Another tale told how a Grandpa came to the rescue of his three year old grandson who needed comforting.  Grandpa carved a kind looking wolf, called La Loba to keep watch over his grandson.

Finally we were entertained by a poem inspired by the view of a nesting loon.  This view of a mother loon doing her job related to the universal job of a mother birthing her child.

***  MARK YOUR CALENDAR:  Our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 30 and we will benefit from a Writing Workshop led by Michael Czarnecki and Steve Coffman.  This is always an inspirational event.   More details will be distributed in early September.

Michael and Steve are careful listeners and offer valuable and beneficial critiques.  So, we do not have a specific assignment, but any previous piece or new one is welcome.

Enjoy, and see you at the end of September.

As many of you know Michael and Steve enjoy listening to a piece which you bring to the meeting to share.  They are careful listeners and offer valuable and beneficial critiques.  So, we do not have a specific assignment, but any previous piece or new one is welcome.

Enjoy, and see you at the end of September.
